Caregiver burnout is real. And it’s a challenge facing hundreds of thousands of Americans. In this episode of the Aging in America Podcast, we will be talking about this very thing. Caregiver burnout* is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude — from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able — either physically or financially. Caregivers who are “burned out” may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression. Many caregivers also feel guilty if they spend time on themselves rather than on their ill or elderly loved ones.

As a family caregiver, it’s natural to experience caregiver burnout. The challenge is being able to take action to remedy the situation. Give yourself a much needed break by partnering with a company like Sunlight Support or another non-medical in-home care organization. Many times you can hire a caregiver for a few hours a week to allow you to recharge and focus on the things that bring enjoyment into your life while reducing the stress of caregiving. After all, we act as a caregiver because we love someone so much. You just need to remember to love yourself as well by taking care of yourself!
